Where did this idea come from?

I’m working on a sample for my next Scrap Happy Zoom session, taking photos, writing notes, drawing diagrams, and this idea came from no-where.  Seriously, it popped into my brain.  From where?  Who knows.  Anyway, the project is a small cross-body or waist purse, fully lined, with interior pockets for a cell-phone, lipstick, notepad, and a few other small items.

I decided to make this sample from the backs of a pair of my hubby’s jeans and a few scraps of quilters cotton, along with pieces of quilt batting that I zig-zagged together.  (You can see the beginnings of the purse under the flower.)That denim purse front needed “something”.

Here’s how I Created the Textured Raw Edge Applique

Sew, I dug out a few more scraps, drew a 3 layer flower and here’s the process:

  • First of all, download and print the pattern, or draw your own.   flower pieces
  • Trace each part onto the paper side of Heat ‘n Bond Feather-lite and cut all 3 out on the drawn line.
  • Using a hot iron, fuse the H ‘n B to the wrong side of your chosen fabric, staying 1/4 away from the edge of the fabric.
  • Cut each piece out, 1/4 larger than the H ‘n B.
  • Peel off the paper
  • Arrange the layers on the base and fuse into place with the iron.
  • Select a stitch on your sewing machine.  Be sure to test it on a scrap, then, finally, sew around each appliqued piece, 1/4 inch from the edge.
  • Finally, use a stiff brush to fray and distress the raw edges.

A small buttonhole stitch built into my Epic2 was used to apply each piece, sewing 1/4 inch from the raw edges.

Sew, now I’ll complete the purse, and post pictures in a future blog post.
