Sun Block Shirts
Sun Block shirts make it easy to enjoy the outdoors more safely. The fabric blocks more than 70% of UV a, b, and c. I want to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, but the sun can be dangerous to our skin. I made 2, one for me and one for my daughter who has already had cancer removed from her ear. She asked for a hood, so they both have hoods which will protect against biting insects too.
I’ll let her chose the version she likes best, I wonder which one it will be.
This needed to be a quick and easy project, and it was! I used an old MacPhee pattern and exchanged the collar with a hood from another pattern. The front band is self faced and plastic snaps make a quick but durable closure. The pleat in the back makes movement less restrictive.
These are made with a fabric I’m very familiar with. It’s thin, gauzy, airy, and still blocks enough UV to make me happy. When I owned my store this fabric was a good seller, and now it’s available at Ann’s Fabric Shop in Hamilton.(excuse their website, I linked so you could have their contact information)
When I placed my order I got extra, and still have 2 meters in this colour left, as well as some Fuchsia, Lavender and Beige. If you’d like some, please send me an email yvettechilcott at yahoo dot ca for pricing.
I plan to wear one of these sun block shirts as soon as my daughter choses the version she wants for herself.
ahh!!!! very nice hack!!! I bet your daughter will choose the one on the right!!! I’m making time for myself this week to sew one up as I have had this material now for a few years.!!! ..
I like this look. I have material I got from you before not made up. Thanks for sharing. What McPhee pattern did u use?
hi Shaelah, it’s wonderful to hear from you. It’s a very simple shape, and loose for air. I used MacPhee He/She Shirt. Happy sewing!
