Scrub Cap
This pattern is based on a chemo cap that I designed and use to make caps to donate to people in need. I’ve adapted it to make it larger so this scrub cap will fit over a full head of hair. The opening at the bottom of the back allows for a pony tail. You can make one in less than 1/2 hour once you understand my instructions. There are 3 parts to this cap, the back, the brim and the tie. 100% cotton fabric is the most comfortable.
To make a pattern for the shaped back:
Draw a rectangle 7 inches wide and 10 inches tall. Use a sandwich sized plate to trace around to round the top. Cut out the pattern, then use it to cut one back. The straight end will be the bottom of the cap.
Cut the brim:
The brim is a rectangle 12 inches by 24 inches. Fold it in half longways with wrong sides together matching the long sides together, and press along the fold resulting in a piece 6 inches by 24 inches.
Cut the tie:
The tie is 2 inches by 22 to 24 inches. Fold it in half longways with wrong sides together and press to form a crease down the middle. Unfold, tuck the short ends in by about 1/4 inch, press, then fold each long edge in to the center fold and press. Then refold the strip along the original crease, bringing the outer folds to the center. Top-stitch, 1/8” from the outer edges, all the way around.
Assembly:
To assemble the scrub cap, sew or serge the brim all the way around the good side of the outer edge beginning at 1 corner and ending at the other. I used my serger and found it easiest to manage if I sewed it with the back piece on top. If the brim is too long, simply cut off the excess.
Edge finish the entire long edge which is the back of the cap. I used my serger, if I was using my sewing machine I would used a 3-step zigzag because it lays flat. Turn it to the wrong side by 3/4 inch and top-stitch close to the finished edge to form a casing for the tie.
Insert the tie using a safety pin or an elastic inserter, distribute it evenly, then stitch through it and the center back to anchor it into place.
The back ties adjust the fit of this scrub cap, and are long enough to tie into a bow.

Just finished digging out the pattern we used in your group class.
You still have it? Well done Lynne.
Very nice. Did you see the article where the nurse added buttons to attach the mask?
