Quilt by Serger

Quilt by Serger

Quilt by serger, either using your serger to piece and bind,  or piece, quilt and bind. Why would I?  I would use my serger to piece any project that isn’t going to be quilted.  Duvet covers, pillow covers, table covers.  These 3 came to my mind quickly, and I’m sure I can come up with more ideas.  I was a Husqvarna sewing machine dealer and teacher for more than 20 years and the innovative ideas I saw during that time were amazing.  Quilting by serger was just one of them.

A few years ago someone at a quilting retreat brought this subject up and I took off with it.  I made a quilt with my serger within a very few days and thought it would make a great class. (I serge on a Husqvarna/Viking Amber Air S 600  which not only has overlock stitches, but also does a fantastic chain-stitch.  Perfect for quilting the serger pieced quilt.)

BUT, all you need for piecing a quilt with your serger is a 4-thread overlock stitch.  Like this.  You can also attach the binding with this stich.

I designed a small 30-inch square quilt as my class sample using just 3 fabrics, and 2 blocks.  4-patches and half square triangles are 2 often-used elements in quilt making so I included those in my class.  Here is my original Quilt by serger class sample.

I used fabric from my stash for my original, but then started looking at other fabric combinations.  Here’s a wintery festive version.

I first taught it to our quilt guild as a workshop.  It went over really well and everyone finished their quilts.  I know that lots of quilters have sergers but rarely use them.  With the skills I teach in this workshop I’m sure those sergers will see the light of day more often.

Quilt by Serger Class at Artistic Quilts with Colors

Coming up on Saturday August 26th from 10 to 4.

All you need is your fabric and a 4-thread serger in good working order. A very basic serger is all you need.   There is a supply list and a bit of prep-work so don’t leave it too late.  I include MANY tips in my classes so you’ll be able to apply what you learn to other projects.  There are so many quilt patterns that lend themselves to piecing by serger.

If you have any questions, please reach out to either Artistic Quilts with Colors (the link is above) or email me at yvettechilcott@yahoo.ca
