My Socially Distanced World
Oh my dear friends, how ARE you?
How are you coping in this socially distanced life?
I needed to reach out today (finally) and write a bit, after spending almost 2 weeks doing very little. 3 days after returning from our North Carolina trip I came down with a dreadful head cold and that, plus all the COVID 19 news seemed to take over for a few days.
Our 2-week vacation had been planned well in advance and all our hotel reservations were pre-paid and non-refundable otherwise we would probably have returned home a few days earlier. Hubby and I were both missing home, our fur-kids, and our home cooking. We left Charlotte N.C. on March 11th, and arrived home late afternoon on the 12th. Hubby was suffering from some sort of allergic reaction that affected his vision so I drove. There was nobody ahead of us at the border and I was soooooooo happy to be back in Canada. I am not a relaxed driver and I guess it seems I gripped the steering wheel too tight. A finger-tip on my left hand is still numb, 2 weeks later.
We did have tickets to go to the Dominican Republic for 1 week at a great resort, to spend time relaxing with other family members. We were to leave on March 26th but we all canceled that trip. We’ll try again when the world recovers.
So now I feel like I’m in slow motion.
If my cats didn’t get me up in the morning I wonder how long I’d stay in bed. There are no appointments, no meetings, nothing scheduled. Make tea, drink tea, make breakfast, eat breakfast, make coffee, drink coffee, and so it goes on. Socially distanced.
In my Sewing Room
I do have sewing projects to work on. 7 for Jalie, 3 of which are sponsored by Fabricville, and another for Earth Day which is also sponsored by Fabricvile. 2 of the Jalie garments were completed before our vacation. One of the Jalie patterns required lining and I wanted to use athletic mesh. Then Fabricland closed due to COVID 19. I spent hours online, found some at a good price, placed the order, then wondered when it would be shipped. They were closed, too. Finally, they responded to email and my order will arrive this coming week. All the other sewing projects are finished, and I’ll be posting about them when the patterns are released. (So watch for it, the new patterns are GREAT!)
My Earth Day sewing project used a non-woven fabric from Fabricville and I tried to press a crease out of it. My iron was too hot and it melted. All over the soleplate of my iron. And although I am pretty sure I have a tube of iron cleaner in my sewing room somewhere, I can’t find it. And all the sewing stores are closed. Walmart had none.
I checked on-line for remedies and a baking soda paste was highly recommended. Huh, other than the paste clogging the holes in the sole-plate, there was no change. Another suggestion was ironing salt on tin-foil and I ended up freaking out the cats (they hate that tin-foil sound) and getting salt all over the iron board and the floor. It did help a bit, but I still was afraid to iron my light coral coloured piece of linen. I ended up using a Magic Eraser and got most of it off.
You can follow the link to the Fabricville blog for a post on this and many other Earth Day projects as we get into April.
Whew.
Another challenge overcome.
All minor, but still challenges.
Moving on
I try to get outside every day and enjoy watching the neighborhood welcome spring. The birds in my yard are pairing up, so I got the birdhouses out and up. My sewing friends gave me a new one for Christmas and it’s hanging in the birch tree that my sister gave me to plant in my yard. It was a sapling growing in a woodpile at my late parent’s house which she now owns.
What are YOU doing to stay focused and active during these dark and dreary socially distanced days? Many of you are busy sewing masks and gowns, and others are holed up making quilts.
I’d love to hear from you.
I was just wondering how you were doing and hoping everything was okay as you have been very quiet. Now I know why. Good that everyone is okay. My husband and I have been self isolating as we are in that drafted ‘senior’ group. I spent two weeks in my sewing room making two pairs of Eleonores, two pairs of linen pants also a Jalie pattern and two tops. As. I have as I love sewing, needed a break so am now Spring cleaning the kitchen. Then back to sewing before I tackle another room. Not minding the quiet, bit missing our boys and their families. This too will pass. Looking forward to more of your posts. Stay safe and healthy.
It’s wonderful to hear from you Jane, I was wondering about you as well, and it sounds as though you’re doing ok. Thanks for responding, stay safe and healthy, xoxo
It’s so good to hear from you Yvette, sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well.
Hubby and I have been self isolating for 2 weeks. We did a big grocery shopping and will be ok for awhile. We did an online shopping from No Frills and it takes two weeks to be able to pick it up. They’re so busy and we have to be patient, they’re doing the best they can. We’re getting outside every day to take the dog for a walk, our driveway is 1/2 a km long so we don’t have to worry about coming in contact with others. I have been working slowly, it seems very slowly on two quilts, one for each of my granddaughters. There doesn’t seem to be a rush to get them finished, it seems that we won’t see them for awhile.
We have been splitting some firewood and my husband has been cutting a few more dead trees down that we lost because of the flood.
We’re coping well with isolation and trying to keep ourselves busy.
Stay healthy, happy and keep well.
Jan
Hi Jan, well my cold is long gone, now if this COVID 19 would go as well, life would be good. Take care and I hope you stay healthy, xoxo
Glad to hear you are well and getting outdoors for fresh air and watching you furry friends! Have not been doing a lot of sewing but hand appliqués the block from the Guild. Turned out lovely I think. I did a bit of embroidery on it too. Not making all the blocks but wanted to try this one. I am going to make a hanging for my sewing room. My first attempt! I am working on the quilt of Jans’ that you gave to me at sewing. Took it all apart and added some fabric in coordinating colour so working on this at the moment. Did some yard work, raking etc. Taking Miss Pepper for her daily walks. So the day pretty busy with sanitizing everything! I made my own sanitizing liquid, 1 part javex to 9 parts water, when I worked in Health Care this was what we used so I decided to make my own.
Stay well Yvette!,
hi Heather, yes, the warmer days call me outside, so it’s a good thing my sewing is almost caught up. Stay safe and well!
Hi Yvette, long time since I’ve visited your blog, love the new look (well, new to me) Now I have more time on my hands I’m visiting some of the sites to catch up with folk. Things are well in our part of Quinte West, get outside every day, exercise, craft, read and clean. I’ll soon have the cleanest house along with lots of others. I did a sewing project recently, upcycled some free bags with advertising on them. My yarn supplies are running low, and who in their right mind would declare yarn and fabric stores as non essential!!! Obviously not a crafter. Keep busy, and stay happy.
Hi Linda, thanks for dropping by and welcome back. I hope this crazy world gets better soon, take care, and keep safe and healthy.
