Men’s Pants for Traveling

Why did I sew men’s pants for traveling?

Because I can!

My hubby and I LOVE to travel!  As a result, we know exactly what features we need in travel clothes.  Everybody’s needs are very specific including ours.  My 6 ft 3-inch tall hubby carries glasses (and/or sunglasses) so all his (long) shirts need pockets.  That’s shirts, not tee-shirts.   He also carries a wallet and passports, so all his (long) pants pockets need to be large and secure. Biting insects seek him out, so he needs long pants.  Washable and wrinkle resistant is also important.

About the Pattern

I already had the very best pattern! Tried and true Jalie 2107 Pants and Shorts for Men and Boys. (As a Jalie Ambassador I got the pattern at no charge in exchange for making the pants and blogging about the process.)

You can buy it for yourself by clicking here.  btw, don’t let the fact that it’s a “you-print” PDF turn you away, once you’ve done it a time or two it’s easy.  (And no shipping fees, plus you can shop in your jammies.)

I used this same pattern to make him shorts and shared that in this post.

Knowing that it fit well, it was just a matter of cut and sew.  I chose a quick drying lightweight woven (discontinued) fabric in navy.  I have since spoken with the supplier and they suggest I try one of their other fabrics for the next one.  (There’s a piece on its way), sew watch for a post on that later this spring.  In fact, if you’re interested in finding out more and haven’t subscribed yet, do it now.

How I Customized the Pattern

My hubby’s arthritic fingers have trouble with buttons, so the pocket flaps are secured by velcro and I found navy!  I sewed the velcro onto the inside of the flaps before finishing them, which took a bit of planning.  I like the clean finish.

The construction method makes them look like “store-bought”.  We love the deep pockets, and I like the professional look.  My sewing machine does great bar-tacks, so the fly looks just like it should and went together really well. Navy doesn’t photograph well and shows every piece of lint/cat hair.

We both really like these and here’s why;  they look “store bought”, there are plenty of generously sized pockets, and the fit suits him.  My customization makes these pants ideal for our next vacation.   Have you sewn pants for your guy?  How did it go?

  1. Those look great! I have never sewn pants for my husband. But, I do enjoy the satisfaction of being able to sew things just right for him. He is not super tall, but seems to have extra long legs and arms, so when I sew him t-shirts and long johns I can make the legs and arms just a bit longer for him. He appreciates that so much. I can tell your husband appreciates the care you put into making garments just for him. Well done.

  2. Thanks for your post, a nice reminder about this pattern. Someday I really should make a pair of these shorts in microfiber for my hubby. He’s been wearing the same shorts since he was 15 years old but won’t give them up because they are comfy. Time for an intervention!

    • You’re welcome! These are a microfiber, really light and quick drying, but just enough heft for a bottom weight. I hope he likes the fabric, I’m a little worried, as he’s “old school” and likes jeans and denim.
