Meet Sam by Jalie, a great new sewing pattern

A gift for my hubby, this is better than “ready to wear”! Meet Sam by Jalie!

Jalie describes Sam as: If you loved the Alex fleece but are looking for a full-zip option, Sam is your perfect match! This sleek, hip-length jacket with a high collar keeps you warm on cool days and layers beautifully for colder weather. With practical side pockets (and hidden interior ones) plus a zippered chest pocket that’s perfect for adding a fun fabric detail, Sam is a versatile, cozy staple for your handmade wardrobe.

My Version of Sam

Sew, that caught my attention! 28 sizes! (I sewed size GG.)  I love to sew for my hubby and love to add my own little touches.  This outer pocket (with the hidden zipper) was the perfect place to use a piece of my faux leather that was too small to make anything with, but too large to toss.  (You know what I mean.)

BTW, if you’re sewing this for a left-handed person, you could put that pocket on the right side for them, instead of on the left side.

And I snuck in a light blue zipper, lol.

Sam has 5 pockets in total; the zipped one, then 2 outer welt pockets and 2 large interior pockets!

My fabric is a grey/black heather toned, heavy weight knit, not too stretchy, with black fleece on the wrong side.

The fabric thickness made some of the sewing hard going, but slow and steady won.  I used my serger for all the side seams, the top of the interior pockets and to finish the edges before inserting the zipper and the hems.

I used a “flat-lock” stitch built into my sewing machine to sew the upper pocket on, and for all my hems. (I added photos, but apologize for the blurriness.)

A piece of black and white striped ribbon finishes the inside of the collar.

Zipper Information:

My nylon zipper was 2 teeth too long!  I didn’t have any zipper stops.  What I did was cut off the top 2 teeth with a pair of cuticle cutters, then turned the extra zipper tape to the inside with a tight fold, and stitched it down.  The fold in the zipper tape prevents the zipper from going up past the teeth, so all is well.

In Closing:

No photos of him wearing it, though, as he’s not too well, and not up for photo-shoots.  It’s a winner, and he loves the coziness, AND the pockets!  Do you have one in your future?  I look forward to seeing photos of YOUR creations!
