At this time of year Jalie often releases a new sewing pattern. This year it’s Jalie’s Convertible Backpack Galaxie 5!

The VEGA bag is a versatile 3-in-1 bag that you can use as a tote bag, messenger bag, or backpack. The bag is fully lined, has a deep front pocket, two zippered pockets, and open pouches inside, as well as side pockets on the outside. (Those side pockets are the perfect size for a water bottle, AND, my travel mug fits nicely, too.)

My version is made of a mid-weight denim that had just been gifted to me the week before the pattern was released.  What a great coincidence that was!  The lining and the straps came from my stash, and the all the hardware was purchased locally.   If you have trouble locating the hardware, Jalie has some great suggestions on their website.  The little clip on the end of the key leash was originally on a “small dog” leash, lol.

The zippers came from my stash, too.  The inside ones are both the same colour, and I like the bit of pink inside the bag.

I chose to make my own straps from the lining fabric, but you could use purchased webbing.  It’s available here locally and there are many colours to chose from.  The instructions include both options.

This bag; Galaxie 5 The Convertible Backpack was fun to sew, in fact I got so “into it” that I almost missed making myself lunch one day.  That NEVER happens to me, lol. It had some challenging steps, but the instructions included many diagrams which really helped.  There’s also a video tutorial on Jalie’s website that takes you through then entire bag-making process.
