Handmade Wooden Buttons Accent Jalie’s Dolman
My sister made and gifted me 3 dozen cards of handmade wooden buttons last year.
Each card was carefully labeled and the buttons are sewn inside.
There were 2 obstacles that held me back from using them; #1, the garment had to be “special”, and #2, the buttons are not machine wash and dryable. (All my clothes get machine washed and dried.)
THEN, I had a night-time brainwave. Cuff links came to mind, and here’s what I came up with! (Close-up view.)
The wooden button is under the hair pic and a smaller plastic button is on top, 8 wraps of a double strand of strong polyester thread with the hair pic in-between left a space between the buttons. It was fiddly, but it DID work.
Even easier was 8 strands of the same thread, threaded onto a needle with the tails tied into a square knot and a dab of fabric glue. After the glue dried, I trimmed the tails of thread close to the knot.
I made 6 of these, then sewed buttonholes to fit the smaller button. The small button goes through the buttonhole, and the wooden button sits on top! NOW I can easily remove the wooden buttons for laundry.
I’ve used this Jalie Dolman #3352 pattern many, many times.
I’ll write more about my modification (hack) in another post.
Here’s a post about making one entirely on a serger in 1 hour or less.
What a novel idea!
You are soooo creative and you certainly enhanced the original design.
