Imaginary Vacation Sewing

Sew, what is imaginary vacation sewing?

I LOVE to travel with my hubby.  Road trips into the U.S. are fun, exploring cities, museums, historic sites, and restaurants.  When we’re not traveling though, I sew.  I LOVE to sew.  After being on the road for a few days I find myself indulging in imaginary vacation sewing.  I like to let my imagination run free dreaming up projects, classes, lessons, and blog posts too.  And I do have a lot on my sewing plate; a class to teach at our quilt guild, a machine knitting workshop to teach in Omemee, a bunch of secret garments to sew for Jalie, and a blog post for Fabricville.

Sometimes I shop for fabric in the U.S.(even though I really don’t NEED more fabric).  This trip (March 2020) our Canadian dollar is in the toilet, therefor shopping isn’t exciting me very much.

My hubby is a fan of alternative history author Harry Turtledove so we’ve been locating and shopping at as many Barnes and Noble bookstores as we can. I love to check out their magazine selection while he checks out their selection, just in case.  Lucky me, I scored 2 Burda Style fashion magazines!  My late grandmother occasionally sent this type of magazine to my late mom, and we spent many happy hours pouring over them.

This is the first Burda Style I found.  I didn’t even look at the price, I didn’t care, I wanted it. $11.79 in American funds,  $16.28 in Canadian funds for 43 patterns?  My imaginary vacation sewing has more fuel.

These designs caught my attention, and although I may never sew them, they inspire me.

Then, in the next Barnes and Noble we went to, I found this one.  The styles are simpler to sew, printed on tissue pattern paper, and include seam allowances.

In this issue I like the look of the pants, they’re much like Jalie’s Eleonores that I love so much.  The dolman pullover design lends itself to colour-blocking, i.e. using up some larger pieces of leftover ITY knits.  Food for thought, more imaginary vacation sewing.

Now, off for more sight-seeing.

  1. Oh!! Yvette these are wonderful patterns… awesome find!!!! can’t wait to see you back!!!! enjoy the rest of your well deserved holiday!!! 🙂

  2. I learned to sew using Burda magazine! My mum subscribed my entire childhood – we would eagerly await them at the mailbox each month and then tell her which ones we wanted her to make. It was fun thinking so many of the styles were so hideous, only for them to become the next trend 2 years later!

  3. I used Burda patterns many years ago when I used to make all my own clothes. Very stylish designs. Keep having fun GF 😘

  4. Imaginary Vacation Sewing – love it. We’re just back from 6 weeks visiting our daughter in Australia and in spare time I reread your blogs and got inspired watching YouTube sewing videos. Trouble is now I am too jetlagged to start any of those planned projects! Enjoy your trip. Alison
